EXP3: Final Design Statement

The design of my bridge has a focus on be conscious of the environment. The central tower is made up of individual timber pieces which sit with a small gap in between. This gap allows one to focus on the environment behind to create an optical allusion upon which that section of the building disappears. However it also allows Helen Keller to ‘feel’ and “smell” the environment as the breeze blows through the structure, as she is unable to experience it through sight and hearing. While this theme continues throughout the structure, the square profile of the lower proportion of the tower presents an ordered and structured sense, which represents the concise and calculated nature of Angela Merkel. For the bridge itself, it remains unformed when not needed, hence does not impact on the environment. However simply rises from the valley floor to form when required. The design forms in sections so it may be stored in a small space while the individual platforms are quite thin and light to reduce the aesthetical impact on the environment when formed.

EXP3: Key Guide

Although the design of my project may be simple, the elevators within portray a rather complex mechanism. Therefore I have devised an architectural experience which shows every aspect my design. Note that due to the complexity one must follow the steps below perfectly to ensure the system works.

1. Start by dropping into the game on the higher land platform of the valley. Press “h”.

2. Once the high side bridge rises up to join the valley wall to the central tower, walk across and into the tower. Begin exploring this floor.

3. To move from this floor downwards through the tower press the following buttons in the followings order. Start by pressing “r” to move to the floor below. Explore this floor and then press “t” to move to floor below that. Continue using this system to move and explore the structure by pressing the following button in order:
“y” - “u” – “o”

4. Once on the bottom floor press “p” to return to the upper floor of Angela Merkel’s section. Find your way to the reception and bridge. Stand on the marked individual platform at the beginning and press “j” to move to the valley floor. Once on the valley floor move to explore the meeting place under the tower.

EXP3: Final Pictures

Image 1

Image above portrays the overall composition in formation. One is to identify the central tower containing the office spaces and the two very light weight bridges either side at different heights, connecting to the either side of the Yosemite inspired valley. One further identifies at eye height towards the top the notion of being able to see a general image behind the structure through the individual floors.
Image 2

This image presents the meeting space located beneath the tower acting as almost a foundation for the entire structure. We identify the vertical slits which work as a juxtaposition to the horizontal slits between the floors above, defining it from the rest of the structure while also providing a unique framed view out to the forest.
Image 3

We identify here the interior to the meeting space. A very simple space to allow the diverse and unique conversation between the two women to define the sense of the space rather than the aesthetics. A formal table as well as a lounge and coffee table are presented in a style which connects to the style of the floor formation above, in terms of simple pieces of timber extruded from the walls as it is overall sunken into the valley floor.

Image 4

The image above presents the lower bridge to the side of the valley. We identify that the bridges texture remains the same except for the first section. This is to define this as the personal lift for Angela Merkel to the valley floor and hence meeting space.
Image 5
The final image simply presents the overall tower in a unique view as we see the various rooms for the women cut away from a central piece. We identify the change in the shape for Helen’s space as it angles downwards, presenting the notion of crushing adversity due to the extra pressure and forces involved as it canter leavers outwards.

EXP 3: Tower Floor Plans

Due to the complexity of my central tower I have decided to provide the floor plans to each floor as a guide around the building and office spaces.

-Angela Merkel Section-
Within this section of the tower for Angela Merkel I decided to break down her individual business and personal needs within an office. I therefore included a basic temporary sleeping space due to the office being located quite a distance from any city as well as the basic bathroom, kitchen and sitting room for relaxation. While for her business needs I have decided to include a formal office, boardroom for meetings, a media room for conducting satellite press conferences and reception.

-Helen Keller Section-

Helen Keller occupies the upper two floors, and similar to Angela’s floors have been broken down into her personal and business requirements. Similar to Angela, I have included a temporary sleeping space, bathroom, kitchen and sitting room. However for the business requirements I have simply included a reception and two separate offices. A casual office for writing her novels and a formal office for writing her lectures.

Miranda Kerr secures coveted modelling deal with Prada and Jil Sander

VICTORIA'S Secret angel Miranda Kerr has secured two of the most coveted advertising campaigns in the modelling world.

Kerr will feature in the high-end fashion advertising campaigns for Prada's and Jil Sander's autumn/winter 2010/11 collections. It places her on equal footing with fellow Aussie supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw, who has landed the advertising campaign for Chanel's autumn/winter 2010 collection. Kerr has had a rapid ascent from lingerie model to celebrity supermodel and is now among the fashion world's elite. Barely a year ago, Kerr got her first major assignment when she posed for influential photographer Terry Richardson alongside fellow Aussie beauties Kershaw and Catherine McNeil for the 2010 Pirelli calendar. Then in February, she rejoined McNeil on Prada's runway for the autumn/winter 2010/11 show before appearing for a second time at Balenciaga's Paris Week show, this time modelling in its autumn/winter 2010/11 show. The latest advertising coups for the luxury brands cement Kerr's new fashion status. She is only the second Australian model to have been shot for Prada, following in the footsteps of Gemma Ward. "I think she's a very good little businesswoman," said Edwina McCann, Australian Harper's Bazaar editor. "That in itself is incredible because she was the classic kind of Victoria's Secret girl, more into the lingerie/swimwear category than the high-end runway category." Kerr, 27, found international celebrity through her relationship with Hollywood hunk Orlando Bloom, her multi-million-dollar contract as a Victoria's Secret angel, and as a regular GQ cover girl. "I think people like Miranda are very good for fashion overall and I like the fact that models can become brands, because in a lot of ways it's more appropriate I think than celebrities," Ms McCann said.

Helen Keller

Helen Keller, 87, Dies

Blind and Deaf Since Infancy, She Became Symbol of Courage

Westport, Conn., June 1--Helen Keller, who overcame blindness and deafness to become a symbol of the indomitable human spirit, died this afternoon in her home here. She was 87 years old. "She drifted off in her sleep," said Mrs. Winifred Corbally, Miss Keller's companion for the last 11 years, who was at her bedside. "She died gently." Death came at 3:35 P.M. She is survived by a brother, Phillips B. Keller of Dallas, and a sister, Mrs. Mildred Tyson of Montgomery, Ala. After private cremation, a funeral service will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington. No date has yet been set.

Triumph Out of Tragedy

For the first 18 months of her life Helen Keller was a normal infant who cooed and cried, learned to recognize the voices of her father and mother and took joy in looking at their faces and at objects about her home. "Then," as she recalled later, "came the illness which closed my eyes and ears and plunged me into the unconsciousness of a newborn baby." The illness, perhaps scarlet fever, vanished as quickly as it struck, but it erased not only the child's vision and hearing but also, as a result, her powers of articulate speech. Her life thereafter, as a girl and as a woman, became a triumph over crushing adversity and shattering affliction. In time, Miss Keller learned to circumvent her blindness, deafness and muteness; she could "see" and "hear" with exceptional acuity; she even learned to talk passably and to dance in time to a fox trot or a waltz. Her remarkable mind unfolded, and she was in and of the world, a full and happy participant in life. What set Miss Keller apart was that no similarly afflicted person before had done more than acquire the simplest skills. But she was graduated from Radcliffe; she became an artful and subtle writer; she led a vigorous life; she developed into a crusading humanitarian who espoused Socialism; and she energized movements that revolutionized help for the blind and the deaf.

Angela Merkel

The Rise of Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel first came into prominence during the darkest days of the party-slush scandal. She strongly denied allegations that bribes were paid for the supply of tanks to Saudi Arabia, describing them as "totally absurd". But, as the crisis deepened and the full scale of former chancellor Helmut Kohl's role in it became apparent, she was the first to turn on the man who had plucked her from obscurity and brought her into the cabinet. The gamble paid off. For Vera Lengsfeld, an East German Green who switched to the CDU, the choice of Merkel to lead the party represents a mini revolution: "Its a breakthrough for women" she said. "She is very competent person - she has leadership qualities and we expect her to be a good leader."

Eastern influence

Angela Merkel's success has been meteoric. Only months ago it seemed unthinkable that the CDU - a traditional party with its roots in Catholicism - could chose an East German, female, Protestant as leader. Now members of the party elite, like the former General Secretary Peter Hintze, are queuing up to show allegiance: "She is a really intelligent and bright woman" he says. "That she comes from the East is a sign that the reunified Germany is coming back together".

New Thatcher?

Her rapid rise on the back of the scandal has been noted by the satirists. But jibes about her casual appearance have failed to dent her new-found popularity with the party. CDU people-power effectively turned a series of mood-testing conferences into US-style primary elections...and she swept the board. But commentators and politicians alike are at a loss to define what she stands for. Ulrich Klinkert, her deputy when she headed the Environment Ministry in the mid-1990s, says she is a highly competent professional, but says comparisons to Britain's Margaret Thatcher are wide of the mark: "Its too easy to say she is Germany's Margaret Thatcher - she is a little bit Margaret Thatcher and a little bit Tony Blair."

Star quality

She remains something of an enigma - a circus ringmaster capable of holding various party acts together, but not as yet the star of the show in her own right. Karl Feldmeier, senior correspondent with the Frankfurter Allgemainer Zeitung newspaper, says party members have rallied to her cause - not because of what she stands for, but because she is "convincing" as a person. "She doesn't have a group of close allies in the party, as has been typical in the decades before," he explains. "She is supported by the sympathy of a growing part of the membership of the party - and that's all."

New liberalism

Some members of the CDU see Angela Merkel as something of a role model. Katerina Reiche, the youngest CDU MP in the Bundestag, says Mrs Merkel stands for family values, but not as the party has known it before. "In former times, being married was important - now we talk of families being important, but not necessarily the marriage as an institution. Even in a gay relationship people take care of each other - that's a switch for a conservative party" The party right-wing is troubled by such liberalism but has failed to block her progress. Becoming leader does not necessarily mean Angela Merkel will become the CDU candidate for chancellor in 2002, but a female head of government is at least a real possibility.

EXP2: Overall Design Explanation

The overall design intends to join the two scientists within the land form as itself as it supports the overall structure. Stephen Hawkins laboratory use the thin structure as well as the triangle textures on the roof and floor to direct his view and mind in a linear and mathematical manner beyond the usual state of mind. While Charles Darwin’s is open to the elements to extend his minds perception of the surround environment and hence understanding of evolution.

The Black Box Connection

The Black Box - Erika Kruger, Slide 10/11
Erika Kruger’s complex piece of work is able to be related my own through the notion of form as we pay particular attention to the section “1. Analogy of the Cave”. History has presented the notion of form to be a sense continually defined through the notion that it reveals architectures beauty through not the shapes which make up a structure but rather the space it defines around itself. Kruger’s exploration of the cave reveals the way in which within a cave our experience is defined by the form of space and material which surrounds us and not the air in between, enhanced through the notion we see not the caves shadows but only our own. This notion directly relates to our formations of rectangular prisms as we are defining architectural form through not the interior of the shapes but rather the space around the prisms.

Google Sketch-Up Model Images

Draft Model One: Complex/Simplistic

The design above displays an underground studio representing "simplistic" while the above ground and upper level studio represents "Complex". Large glass windows either side of the structure allow natural lighting to penetrate the complex shape.

Draft Model Two: Simplistic/Stature

The design above presents a studio below the ground which represents "stature". Through the large height and shape of the room the eye is directed to the upper "V" shape and stair. The above ground structure use straight lines to create a simplistic gallery and studio above.

Final Model: Overall Exterior

The image above presents the overall design of this project fitted into a hill side. It represents simplistic design above and a design of stature below. The interior may seem complex, however the angled walls throughout the centre are in fact mirrors, reflecting the view from the human perspective through the stairs access. This creates the illusion of a continuous gallery from either end with nothing appearing in between.

Final Model: Interior One

This image above represents the corridor to either end of the gallery with the complex glass exterior wall.

Final Model: Interior Two

The image above presents on of the galleries at either end of the design. The glass wall and corridor is seen as well as the interior angular structure which is responsible for appearing invisible to the eye of the viewer. The upper studio is also visible situated above the angular walls.

Final Model: Stair-Gallery to Upper Studio

The image above presents the first stair design. It is a single ramp which appears smooth until someone steps on a tread, which results in this folding flat to support the person as a handrail is raised from the side of the ramp via a pulley system mechanism for each individual tread.

Final Model: Stair-Gallery to Studio Below

This image presents a stair which is a square shape, made of individual rectangular prisms supported from the roof with flat turning areas at the corners.
